St Benedict’s Parish Church Earthquake Strengthening

The Church is constructed from steel portal frames supporting soaring roofs, allowing clerestorey windows to the Nave and Sanctuary.
Roman 1 inch brick was applied to the exterior walls, with the interior linings a mix of brickwork and redwood cedar vertical cladding was used. The proportions and colour of the brickwork, with the cedar cladding sets the tone and character of the spaces of the church.

Engineers BECA provided various options to strengthen the building to 80% NBS, and adopted the solution that would retain as much of the existing brickwork as possible so as to preserve the existing character of the Church.

The brickwork has been retained and strengthened in all locations apart from 8m high Sanctuary rear wall. This was replaced with new lightweight timber construction supporting 8.3m high Metra panels. New portal frames were installed to work in conjunction with existing portal frames. The portals are concealed within the existing/ new building fabric.

Alterations to the Church layout were carried out at the same time as the strengthening work to better meet the changing requirements of the community.
